Post Author Take1 / October 1st 2019

This September, Take 1 attended the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam. Our very own Claire Brown sat down with Ben Dales of IABM TV to discuss our new cloud-based transcription platform, the Take 1 Cloud and also what makes us one of the most secure service providers in the market. Watch the full interview below to see what the future holds in an industry of constant technological innovation and evolution.

Full transcript:

Ben Dales

Hello and welcome to IABM TV. Today, I’m joined by Claire Brown, Commercial Officer at Take 1. Claire, welcome to IABM TV.

Claire Brown

Hi. Thank you.

Ben Dales

So, what does Take 1 do?

Claire Brown

We are a media services company and we deliver transcription in multiple languages, but also post-production scripts which, if you like, are a blueprint for localisation: they contain lots of rich metadata and dialogue and transcription. Also, we have an Access services arm and we deliver captioning and audio description services as well. We’re rapidly growing. We have offices in the UK, the US, South America, and we’ve just opened a new office in Connecticut.

Ben Dales

Okay.

Claire Brown

We have some fantastic clients in the broadcast and the digital space that we work with. We’re preferred suppliers for Discovery, for transcription of all of their assets for localisation, right the way through to BBC Ideas, a lovely digital brand that we support with captioning. I think the value that we offer is, it comes from our production tool Liberty. Liberty is our own proprietary software and it enables to deliver our products as structured data. We know the value of this data and there are a lot of activities further up the supply chain where this data can be used for compliance, localisation, but also search and discovery and personalisation.

Ben Dales

Okay, so you’ve just launched the Take 1 Cloud.

Claire Brown

Yes, we have.

Ben Dales

What can you tell us about this?

Claire Brown

We’ve just launched the Take 1 Cloud. We have a live client in the US on the West Coast, a large production company, and we’re on-boarding several clients in other regions. It’s basically a web-based portal that enables us to share assets in a really secure cloud-based environment, so it’s great for production staff; for example, they’re able to upload rushes and get overnight transcripts really fast and delivered securely in the same environment. It’s also a basis for us to integrate with our client systems, so we have an enhanced version where we can auto scan Avid, and pick up proxies for our clients to then go in and check which of those proxies they’d like us to transcribe, and then we’re able to deliver those back, so it’s all about security and integrated workflows.

Ben Dales

And so how does the security satisfy client needs?

Claire Brown

Security is extremely important in the business that we’re in, so all of our clients that we work with, we have big drama titles that we manage and also contributor files for production companies, so there’s a GDPR and a Data Protection angle there too, and the Take 1 Cloud has been absolutely built with secure measures and controls in place. We also adhere to the DPP Committed to Security hallmarks, and we’re about to launch our TPN assessment later this year. So, yeah, we’ve built in all sorts of features and measures and controls like two-factor authentication, encryption of files, we’ve segmented our networks back at HQ, so it’s been a two-year programme of intense security controls to adhere to the industry standards that we need to adhere to.

Ben Dales

Okay. So, automated speech recognition software is attracting a lot of attention recently.

Claire Brown

Sure.

Ben Dales

What is Take 1’s position on using ASR?

Claire Brown

ASR absolutely has a place in our businesses and in the transcription sector. It offers huge amounts of operational efficiencies and we’re exploring every single way that we can use AI tools and plug them into our Take 1 Cloud platform, actually. It can be mixed, in terms of quality and accuracy. For some products it works well, for others there’s manual intervention that needs to take place. I mean, our post-production scripts, for example, they have dialogue, they capture dialogue, but also sometimes annotations, really rich metadata that needs some manual intervention. And, you know, quality means different things to different clients, so for some clients, you know, we have three or four QC checks of our work. So, yeah, it lends itself well to some products, but not to all, and the moment it improves and it’s ready for that then for sure we’ll plug it straight in and deliver via that mechanism.

Ben Dales

Okay. Excellent. So, Claire, it sounds like there’s a lot going on. What does the future hold for Take 1?

Claire Brown

Well, we’re definitely going to be rolling out more and more clients on-boarding them to the Take 1 Cloud. That’s already in the mix. We’re seeing a lot of demand for different transcription from different markets, new markets. There’s some interesting language pairs out there right now for television. The explosion of OTT means that there are programmes coming from new territories, and we can see growth there, so we’re doing transcription in more languages as we grow. Also, audio description is a growth area for us. I see a lot of growth there. There’s real room for innovation in that space using AI tools and generally re-working the workflows to look at where there are efficiencies and where we can be delivering those cost savings to our clients.

Ben Dales

Okay, well it all sounds very exciting. Claire, thank you very much for joining us.

Claire Brown

Thank you. Thank you.
