Media files and formats

Which video file formats can Take 1 accept?

We accept many different video file formats, including the following:MP4 compressed with H.264 video codec with AAC audio, MOV (Quicktime), Flash Video (.flv), WMV, AVI, MPEG, DivX, Sony XDCAM MXF proxy files.

What is the best size for my video files?

You can upload your video files via our Take 1 Uploader site. To calculate your optimal file size, every minute of video should add 2 MB to the size of the file; for example a 30 minute video at optimal compression should be approximately 60MB and preferably video files should not exceed our maximum of 300MB per 30 minutes of material. If there is significant, important captioning or on-screen text that will need transcription then you may want to consider raising the filesize to ensure legibility.

Which audio file formats can Take 1 accept?

We accept timecoded or non-timecoded audio files in any of the following formats:

  • MP3 Recommended
  • Mono, Stereo or Polyphonic Broadcast WAV (BWF)
  • WMA
  • WAV
  • AAC
  • OGG

If you have any questions please let us know.

What is the best size for my audio files?

Our optimum bit rate for MP3 audio files is at 128kb/s, as it provides the best balance between file size and audio quality.

I have files in a format that is not listed, can Take 1 transcribe them?

If you can record it and there is audio on it, we should be able to transcribe it. Send us a test file in advance and we’ll investigate and let you know how we get on.

What frame rates do Take 1 accept?

We can accommodate most common frame rates, however our preferred frame rates are 23.98, 24, 25 and 29.97. Please let us know if you intend to send us media with a frame rate different to the above. We may ask that you send a test file in advance so that we can assess it and let you know if it is something we’re able to work with.

What types of timecode can Take 1 work from?

We can very easily work from the following:

  • LTC (Longitudinal SMPTE timecode on one stereo channel)
  • Broadcast WAV (BWF) timecode metadata
  • BWF Widget exported MP3 ID3 data (see
  • Sony XDCAM proxy MXF embedded timecode
  • Panasonic P2 XML (please call about this format)
  • BITC (Burnt In TimeCode)
  • You can specify a start timecode for each of your files
  • We can start at 00:00 for each of your files

If you have another type of timecode, let us know and we’ll see what we can do.

Can I send Stereo WAV with LTC or Broadcast WAV with timecode in metadata?

Yes we can work from either of these file types.  However , they tend to be much bigger and therefore take longer to upload.  Ideally, please convert all Broadcast WAV files to MP3s before uploading. You can do this using BWF Widget Pro (

If you are unable to supply timecode as either LTC or as a metadata tag, we can work from a start timecode if we are given one. Please note if we receive multiple small files, a surcharge may be applicable to cover the additional time required to administer them.

NB Polyphonic Broadcast WAV files:  If you are recording polyphonic Broadcast WAV files, please ask your sound recordist to mix these down to stereo files before sending them in.  However, if they do not have time and will therefore be supplying polyphonic files, please ask them to label each channel clearly and supply us with accurate information on which channels require transcription.

I don’t understand…Could Take 1 liaise with my tech about the technical stuff?

Absolutely. Send us contact details and we can go “”geek-to-geek””.
